For the longest time, Dersu Uzala was only available through Kino Video on VHS and DVD. Now, with what looks like a restoration (since my only frame of reference is the VHS, it’s hard to say) on Filmstruck, it could be possible that Dersu Uzala is coming to The Criterion Collection.

I just purchased this copy, wrapped it up and gave to him this week as a Christmas gift. The look on his face when he saw the title and realized what the gift was - sheer delight! He worked as a guide for Vladimir Arsenyev who immortalized him in his 1923 book Dersu Uzala.
